Format for County Schools Championship 2026

Dear PE Teachers/Coaches/Club Secretaries/Athletes

Many of you will be aware that the Age groups for Club Athletics changed from April 1st. These changes mean that in Club Athletics youngsters in Y7/8 are Under 14, Y9/10 Under 16, Y11/12 Under 18 and Y13 Under 20 at Club level.

English Schools Athletics hasn’t moved yet to these age groups and their Championships in 2026 will be in the traditional age groups. Junior -Y8/9, Intermediate – Y10/11 and Senior Y12/13. Norfolk Schools will stick to these Age Groupings for its Championships and Anglian championships.

Hurdles

There is an exception with Hurdles. These events will be in the new Club Age Groups – Y9/10 , sprint and 300m, Y11/12, Sprint and 400m and Y13sprint and 400m.. In the case of female Y11 non-club athletes this will mean running further [ 400m] than was previously the case.
No Y8 students will be allowed in the Hurdles – but will be able to compete in all other Junior age Group events except for Boys Triple Jump.

Throwing Events

In these events the weights to be thrown remain the same as in previous years.
However, Club Athletes in Y8,Y10 and Y12 will find that in their Club events they will have been throwing LIGHTER implements. [Y10 girls will be unaffected]. This means that those in Y8,10 and 12 will have limited opportunities to obtain the ESAA qualifying standard, using the heavier weights. We will use Power of 10 to help us should such an athlete fall just short of the Qualifying standard when selecting our team for English Schools Championships.

Steeplechase Events

These remain the same but Club athletes will have found themselves running much further should they have found a race ! Intermediate [Y10/11] in our Championships is over 1500m as is Senior [ Y12/13] for Girls. Senior Boys compete over 2000 metres.

Where Athletes have to use a heavier implement, run a shorter or longer distance we would hope that Teachers, Coaches, Club Secretaries can point them to the above changes.
Below, I have put two tables to help you see the events that we will be accepting entries for at our County Schools Championships this year.
